Visit the National Palace Museum, the finest collection of Chinese art in the world. These rare and exquisite works had been housed for centuries in Beijing’s Forbidden City and few people outside the imperial court had ever seen them, but they were all packed up for safekeeping and hidden around the country when the Japanese invaded in 1931, and eventually brought to Taiwan by Chiang Kai-Shek. The museum opened in 1965 with the entire collection of 650,000 treasures intact, priceless and unsurpassed. Also admire the magnificent Martyrs’ Shrine which commemorates the soldiers who died for China in the 20th century. Also visit Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial, a 200ft high memorial to the hero who took on Chairman Mao, and who became the ruler of Taiwan. His bronze statue is flanked by inscriptions of the words, ethics, democracy and science, the Three Principles of the People, and the squares and gardens around the hall are popular places and where you will find the national theatre and concert hall. The white marble walls, blue glass roof and red flowers in the surrounding grounds represent the flag and celebrate liberty, equality and fraternity. Continue to a local Taiwanese temple and a handicraft centre. Remainder of the day at leisure. (B)
Drive to Taiwan’s favourite honeymoon spot, Sun Moon Lake which is located in the middle of Taiwan, 762 metres above sea level in the lofty mountains of Central Taiwan. Visit the famous Wenwu Temple, also known as the Literature Warrior Temple, and continue to the Holy Monk Shrine and Ci En Pagoda. Explore around the lake and transfer to your hotel, the Fleur de Chine Hotel. Enjoy the natural hot springs at your hotel. (B)
Drive via the lovely old Jiji Railway Station to Fokuangshan, the Light of Buddha Mountain, a magnificent monastery, the most famous Buddhist sacred place in Southern Taiwan. Learn more about Buddhist thought, history and iconography during a walking tour, and communicate with some of the monks or nuns during the visit. Continue to Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s second city. Visit Love River and Liuhe Night Market. Stay overnight at the Grand Hi-Lai Hotel. (B)

Take the scenic road along the East Coast. The East Coast National Scenic Area, known as “Taiwan’s last unspoiled land”, stretches 170 km down the east coast of the island. Late afternoon continue to Hualien for an overnight stay at Taroko National Park at the Silks Palace Taroko Hotel. (B)
